Auburn's History
Located in Lee County, Auburn was founded in 1836 by John Harper and other settlers from Georgia. Auburn's name was inspired by a poem written by Oliver Goldsmith titled The Deserted Village. The land of present day Auburn was originally part of the Creek Native American Territory until 1832, when the Treaty of Cusseta made the area open to settlers.
Auburn University, first opened as East Alabama Male College, was founded in 1859. The university is the main factor in the city's economy. Auburn University has had four official names, becoming Auburn University in 1960. The programs at the university are ranked among the top in the country.
When the Civil War started in 1861, Auburn emptied, all of the schools and most businesses closed. During the Civil War, a hospital for Texan Confederated soldiers was located in Auburn. Currently, Auburn is Alabama's fastest growing metropolitan area and the 19th fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States.
